It is approved by the U.S. FDA as an appetite suppressant drug, to be used short term as a prescription medicine to treat obese patients; or overweight individuals with bmi 27 kg/m2; who are subjected to increased weight related medical risk such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia; to help them control appetite to reduce weight. It stimulates the central nervous system to boost wakefulness and attention, decreasing fatigue, and reducing appetite. For weight loss, Phentermine is to be used together with exercise and a low calories diet plan, lifestyle change is also necessary.

Phentermine Facts
Systematic name: 2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-2-amine
Chemica formula: C10H15N
Trade names: Adipex-P, Suprenza, Ionamin, Duromine,
How Does Phentermine Work?
Clinical studies show that Phentermine works on the hypothalamus of the brain to stimulate the adrenal glands to release epinephrine and norepinephrine. The release of these neurotransmitters from the adrenal medulla of the adrenal glands is part of the fight-or-flight response which signals satiety. High levels of these hormones tend to suppress hunger signals and reduce appetite. Also, the increase in these hormones indirectly raises the levels of leptin in the brain, which signals fullness.
Also, Phentermine stimulates neurons to release or maintain high levels of catecholamines. The increased levels of this particular group of neurotransmitters are partially responsible for halting neurotransmitter neuropeptide Y – which initiates food intake and increases storage of energy as fat, and trigger the growth of fat tissue.
To a limited extend, Phentermine works outside the brain to release the hormone epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) to cause fat cells to break down stored body fat to increase the ability to burn fat.

The active ingredient in Phentermine tablets is Phentermine Hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients found in Phentermine Hydrochloride tablets are Magnesium Stearate, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Pregelatinized Starch, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Stearic Acid, Lactose Anhydrous, corn starch, propylene glycol, dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, FDC Blue 1 and sugar.

Warnings: Who Should Not Take Phentermine
Those who are allergic to any of the ingredients of phentermine should not take the medicine, to avoid any unwanted allergic effects such as itchy eyes, rash, hives, or even more severe effects like swollen lips, difficulty breathing or even loss of consciousness.
Do not take Phentermine pills if you are currently on stimulating drugs that mimics the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, such as catecholamines, epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), or dopamine. This is because it may stimulate the increases in heart rate, blood pressure; and also causes pupillary dilation.
To avoid any dangerous drug interaction, individuals who are currently on any prescription or non prescription dietary supplements, medications or drugs, should not use phentermine. Also, for those who have taken antidepressant drugs in the last 14 days, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as Phenelzine, Pheniprazine; should avoid phentermine because such MAO inhibitor has not been totally cleared off the body and the interactions could lead to misconceptions and misinformation.

People who are currently pregnant or breast feeding should not use this medication, to prevent this medicine from being passed into the breast milk as it may harm a nursing baby.
If your body system is not in a state to tolerate well with Phentermine, it may cause very severe side effects, some of which are life-threatening. Therefore, people with the following conditions should not use this drug:
Eye disorder whereby the optic nerve suffers some damage Have severe hypertension, heart disease, coronary artery disease, overactive thyroid, glaucoma Have history of substance abuse In case you insist on taking Phentermine to help you lose weight, please consult with your physician to get his/her approval as well as a prescription.

Phentermine Dosing and Administration
In general, the following information is specific only to the average doses of phentermine. The recommended dosage may be different for different patients. If your dose is different from what is listed below, do NOT change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The usual adult oral dosage form is one tablet/capsule (15-37.5 mg) daily, to be administered half an hour before or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. The dosage may be adjusted to suite patient’s need.
For some patients, a half tablet (37.5 mg2 = 18.75 mg each) daily may be adequate, while in some cases it is more proper to take half tablets (18.75 mg) two times a day, half to one hour before meals.

Phentermine should be taken on an empty stomach, once daily, prior to breakfast. If in tablet form, the tablet may be broken or cut in half. Do NOT break, crush, or chew tablets. Phentermine is rapidly absorbed after oral ingestion.
For oral resin dosage form (capsules) – 15 to 30 mg, take once in a day before breakfast. For orally disintegrating tablets for e.g. Suprenza, make sure to take it with dry hands to place the tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve on its own, and then swallow with or without water. It may be administered before or after meal.
Due to the fact that Phentermine acts like a stimulant, take the last dose at least 6 hours before going to bed. This is to avoid the resultant in insomnia.
Phentermine is not recommended for use in patients below 16 or above 60 years old.
